GONE | SHORT FILM

CONCEPT

The main idea of the film is to explore how a series of events, ordinarily spaced in time, could at some point merge together. Memories can often appear chronologically disorganized when tied to negative experiences. Why is our brain only remembering snapshots of painful events? Why do we sometimes forget how these isolated "pictures" are connected together? Does time as we understand it only move forward? What if the events we are supposed to live in the future already happened? What if we were spending our entire life trying to change the inevitable? What if our acts were guided for a reason? These are the questions I wanted to explore in this film.

TIME AND MEMORY

I’ve always been very interested in the concepts of time and memory. But since my grandmother was diagnosed with Alzheimer's, since I've seen her forever lose all the links between her last living memories, they resonate very differently. In quantum physics, time is not seen as a straight line. It is a bunch of layers. Different events can theoretically take place at the same time, even if they seem temporally related. There is no beginning. There is no end. All events are merged. As a storyteller, I really wanted to explore the possibilities this perspective opens.

“The only reason for time is so that everything doesn’t happen at once.”
Albert Einstein

COLLABORATION

This film was also a good pretext to start a collaboration with a very talented music artist. Usually, what I do is browse my playlists for a soundtrack that would enhance the mood I’m looking for, and then contact the artist to get his permission to use it. This time around, I wanted to find someone with whom I could discuss the concept and the ways to express it. I was looking for someone to create something unique with me. The musician, sound designer, and composer Jean-Marc Polet — aka Subskan — helped me bring this film to life. I’m more than proud of what we achieved together. Like in every intense creative collaboration, we had our share of back and forth and ups and downs. But we ended up finding the right balance between our respective expectations. And through this great experience, we became good friends. This is finally to what every collaboration should lead, right ? Thank you mate, it was a true human adventure! To the next one!
